The Parent & Guardian Handbook

Welcome! We have created the NCBLA Parent/Guardian Handbook to help you help your kids become lifelong readers and writers.

There is no one in the world your child loves more than you. There is no one in the world your child wants to please more than you, even if your child is a teenager. You are the biggest influence in your child’s life; you are your child’s first and best teacher. And the best thing that you can do to help your child succeed in his or her formal schooling is to create a home environment that encourages and supports reading and writing. In giving the gift of language — the ability to read and write — to your children , you will not only be helping them succeed in school, you will also be giving them essential survival skills that they will need later in their personal and professional lives.

If you have ideas that have worked for you, ideas that help kids to read and write and connect kids to books and libraries, let us know. And if you have found print or electronic resources that have helped you and your children, please take the time to let us know about those, too. If you have a question, need, or concern we have not addressed, contact us and we will try to address your concerns in a future web edition. And be sure and check out our General Resource and Reference Department where you will find interesting articles, tools, and further information.
