About Us
The National Children’s Book and Literacy Alliance, a not-for-profit organization founded by award-winning young people's authors and illustrators, believes that literacy is about far more than the ability to read. We believe that all young people must have equal access to exciting and interesting books and information sources that invite them to dream and give them the tools to achieve their dreams. We believe that literacy is essential to the development of responsible citizens in a democracy.
The main goal of the NCBLA is to make issues related to young people’s literacy, literature, and libraries an ongoing priority on our national agenda. The NCBLA acts as a freelance nonpartisan advocate creating and developing special projects and events that promote literacy, literature, and libraries and educate the public about practical literacy solutions. The work of the NCBLA is done with these goals in mind:
• Informing the American public about the reality of young people’s literacy, literature, library, and education needs, especially as they relate to families and children challenged by poverty, illness, and dysfunction.
• Promoting the work of, and building partnership projects with organizations, individuals, government, private institutions, and businesses that are actively solving problems related to children’s literacy, literature, and library needs.
• Educating the American public about actions they can take immediately in their professional and personal lives to confront and solve problems related to young people’s literacy, literature, and library needs.
• Inspiring the American public to activism on behalf of young people’s literacy, literature, library, and education needs.
The NCBLA, a 501-C3 not-for-profit, was founded in 1997. The NCBLA office is located in Franklin, Massachusetts the home of the first public library in the United States.
